In June Maria celebrated her 75th birthday with some friends who brought her a special meal and cake. After this celebration she started having a lot of pain in her stomach and changes in her bowel habits. She went to the doctor and he gave her some medicine that helped her for a little while but then the pain started again. She has gone to the doctor several different times during the last 5 months because her pain kept coming back and was gradually getting worse. Finally, 2 weeks ago, the doctor sent her for a CAT scan of her abdomen and a test of her stool and urine. These tests showed that she has a bladder infection and diverticulitis. To heal the diverticulitis she will need a month or 2 of treatment. The total cost of the medicine to treat her bladder infection and one month of treatment for her diverticulitis will be $400. If she needs a second month of treatment for the diverticulitis it will cost an additional $300.

Maria has already borrowed money from family and friends to pay for her other doctor visits over the last 5 months and she has no one left who can help her out with the money to pay for this medicine. Thankfully, Servants was able to help her pay for part of her CAT scan and she was able to borrow the rest, but at this point Servants does not have the money to pay for this medication.

The doctor told her the other day that it’s very important she gets treated as soon as possible because if not she will end up needing surgery to remove the parts of her intestine that have been affected by this disease. Maria is always so grateful when our missionaries and short term teams come visit because she lives alone and says that she feels like we are her family. The other day she said that in Guatemala only true family and friends help people out like Servants has helped her and she thanks God for providing her with family to love her and help care for her.
