Aminta appeared with her brother Fredy for her court appearance on March 1st as ordered but once she arrived, they notified all parties that the hearing would be postponed once again to an undetermined date. Aside from the frustration of having to appear only to be told to come back later, it also is a continued financial burden as well as it costs about $25 round trip for them to take public transportation into the city. Additionally, Aminta has been experiencing some additional stresses in her family.
Lidia decided to leave and go live with her boyfriend. This has been hard on Aminta for her daughter to leave the home without getting married but she also realizes she is an adult and is free to make her own choices. The one thing that is encouraging, however, is that she now has a job and is paying her own way through school!
Jeny is also continuing school at the local institute (not where she was going before) and Nancy is working with the motivation to help with those costs.
There had been som emotional conflicts between Aminta and one of our missionaries in Guatemala because Aminta had been upset that we decided as a ministry to stop supporting Jeny’s education this year as she was failing every class and we decided it would not be advantageous to continue paying her tuition. Aminta took it out personally on our missionary and seemed to be avoiding her. Once her emotions of the situation calmed down they were able to talk. Aminta admitted that with the stress of everything going on, she let her negative thoughts get the best of her and that is why she was avoiding us. It seems to be worked out, however, and we are grateful that we are back in communication with Aminta and her family. We are also very happy to learn that the girls are continuing school and finding a way to pay for it themselves!
We have discovered that sometimes kids or families don’t seem fully invested in their education because they don’t value it as much if they don’t invest a part of their hard earned money in it. We will be interested to see how they continue this year.
Please continue to pray for this family as they work to find their way, for Aminta’s ongoing battle with diabetes, and that her court case would ultimately be resolved!
