This week we have a team serving in Guatemala. We have been visiting multiple families in the community: hearing their stories, praying for them, spending time with them, and sharing God’s love with them.
When we stopped by “just for 5 minutes” to visit Fidel’s family, we asked each adult how we could pray for them. Fidel said, “Well, that I can see again. I am losing my sight. I know God can heal me because he healed me of an infection I had for years after you all prayed for me.” His two daughters who were present said that their only request would be for their dad to be able to see.
We asked Fidel to come to the center so we could all gather around him and pray. After praying for a little bit, we asked him if his sight had gotten any better. “A little bit,” he replied.
“Ok, we’re going to keep praying.” We prayed some more, this time more seriously. We cried out to God to fulfill this family’s wish, that their aging father could see again. We asked him if anything changed. After wiping his eyes with a handkerchief, he said it seemed as though he could see more clearly. We asked if we could pray one last time for him
As we continued to pray more earnestly, we felt God’s presence fall upon us as if it were raining fire! “Lord, he can see you with his spiritual eyes, let him see with his physical eyes again.” We felt the immense heat in and around us. It was indescribable! We felt it burning so strongly, as if a purifying fire was pouring out upon him. As our prayers dwindled to a low roar, we asked one last time if anything changed.
“I can see clearly to the other side of the house!” he answered. We all cheered with joy, some of us with tears in our eyes, at the miraculous God we serve.
THIS is why we do what we do, to share God’s enormous love, presence, and power with those who need it most. God’s goodness is available to all. For those of us who have experienced it, it is our responsibility to share it with others.
