As we work to make sure our families are provided for, one of the things we do is monitor how fast each family consumes their food bags. We try to give them enough to get them by for a month at a time. Recently, we had a conversation with Maribel that pleasantly surprised us! This past month they went through their food quicker than they had previously. When we asked Maribel the reason she said, “Well, our neighbors don’t have anything so we have been sharing what Servants has been providing”. Sometimes they don’t have what folks are asking for, so they scrounge a little money together out of what they make by selling tortillas and go to the corner store and by something to share!
An amusing note was when they shared that for fear of being caught out past curfew, they would tie a small bag of food to a long string and throw it over the wall to their neighbors so they would have something for dinner!
Additionally, they told us that this past month they have really been thinking about the team that came last May and helped put up the wall to protect their house from the rains. This past week, Guatemala was dumped on by a tropical depression that swept through the region. There were many reports of flooding and houses and cars being swept away, but they stayed dry in their house. They asked us to send their love to you and thank you once again for blessing them! Maribel specifically remembered that she couldn’t attend the activity the team did for the mothers on Mother’s Day but you sent her food anyway so she didn’t feel left out. This really made an impact on her.
We have received many donations toward food for the families so we have begun distributing to neighbors in the areas where our families reside and are working on putting together bags to help share with their neighbors. Please continue to pray for this family as they are so selfless and always doing their best to improve their situation. Juan recently got a job at a local hardware supply store since there are no public transportation buses are running. We hope this will be a more secure paycheck for him as well as a job where he isn’t in danger of being extorted by gangs!
